1964 Burns Split Sound Jazz Special, Surf Green SOLD

First the specification, then the story of this unique Burns guitar. Double cutaway body with Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard. White three-ply scratchplate carrying three Burns Split Sound pick-ups with volume and tone controls plus four-way selector. The selector offers a choice of Split Sound, Jazz, Treble and the infamous Wild Dog setting. With original Burns vibrato unit including the cover plate (usually missing!) which is the small thumbscrew-secured type. Enclosed Van Ghent type tuners with chrome buttons. This very attractive 48 year-old Burns is in great condition and has an interesting history. Eddie Cross was the engraver Burns used to make all their scratchplates, headstock logos and so on in the 1960s. The body of this guitar was found under Eddie's bench. It was 'fully loaded' but had not been sprayed and had the letters SG in the neck pocket, This was taken to suggest Surf Green, so the body was finished (beautifully) in this colour. The unfretted neck was also found under the bench and was thought to have been a pattern for fretting operations. The neck is actually intended for a Split Sonic (as the eagle-eyed will have noticed from the headstock design). The two were mated together to form the guitar you see before you. Whatever the truth of this story, I bought this guitar some years ago because I was knocked out by the look of it. All the Split Sound guitar tones are there and it makes a very unique package. There will never be another. SOLD
